Hi! I am Christiaan Page and Welcome to 100 days of summer as we count down the last 100 days before the Tokyo Games. Today, we are going to talk about defining the scope. It sounds like a boring topic and a lot of work. It is important that someone has got to do it. Well, I would argue it is probably one of the most important aspects certainly after defining your audience. Who are you looking to engage with your technology? It really is important to think about what it is we are going to build. What is it we are going to design? And what is it we are going to deliver? The scope is all essential in helping map that journey.
I will give you an example – if you went to a builder and just said “Hey, I want to build a house.” Chances are he would be able to build your house and you would end up with potentially a very nice house. Whether it was exactly what you wanted, could be debatable. So, this is why we have architects, engineers, and builders. As a concert as they come together. They make it possible to design and build and deliver your house. So, they know it is safe and you also know that it will meet what you want the windows where you want them.
You have got no windows, who knows what you might end up with. If you do not do that process of designing and building what you need and it is exactly the same with technology and I say this all the time “please, help me to define your scope.” What is it you want? Really helping understand getting under the skin of the needs so that we can get the right information to the right people at the right time.
So, we think about our audience – we got athletes. They need specific technologies to help them with their performance in terms of measuring or recording or tracking so that they can improve. That is something simple to deal with, but you still need to define it exactly. What is it they want to know? We also look at it on a bigger scale. If we do not do the scoping, we might over scope. A really good example is with energy. It is one of the essential ingredients to most technology, so if we just think of energy as a massive flow of water and we turn on a tap and all the energy comes up once it is out the tap at once – that water has flowed it has gone we do not have it anymore. It is the same when we design an energy system. We need to think about all the components that go into what is going to draw energy so we can scale and make sure that we deliver the right amount of energy at the right time.
All of this comes down to defining the scope and making sure that you are really clear. So, the first step is to know who your audience is, and the second step is making sure you define the scope so that you can get exactly what you need. And make sure it is delivering to the right part of the audience. So that is the next step we take.
Join me tomorrow and we are going to key number three! I am Christiaan Page it has been great to have you with me. Thank you for joining and as always, any comments, questions or if I have said something you are not quite sure what I meant please just drop in the comments. I would love to get those questions great to have you with me and bye for now.
