Can we deliver SPORTS TEC with a HEART?

We often associate technology with hard skills, even when in service of soft skills. For instance, technology allows millions of fans to experience a sports event’s emotions fully. But we don’t associate the same feelings with the process that makes this technology work: procurement, connecting cables at a stadium, monitoring audio, video, streaming, and scoring during a competition. Therefore, how could the words technology and heart come together?

During the decades the Legacy Sport team has been working for the Olympic Games and other major sports events, we have seen what happens when technology is not delivered with a heart. Tech, just like other industries, is a territory for good practices as much as it is for social inequities, discrimination, and bad leadership. What determines the quality of the territory is how much heart we put into what we do. It means more than just being nice – it requires an intentional effort to build sustainable cultures and leadership within our businesses and the temporary teams that get together to deliver a sports event. It also requires advocating for changes in the cultures of the sports and tech communities.

During the past year, we have been more and more intentional in our efforts to contribute to cultural sustainability in sports. We want to share more explicitly with other sports and tech organizations how we build our practices and team. We want people to know that if we are to become a successful sports tech business, we need to value soft skills as much as hard ones. Therefore, we are returning to our blog and social media posts to share how we deliver TEC in the HEART of SPORT.

During the next three months, we will release articles that go deeper into the values and practices we are cultivating here in Legacy Sport. We hope they are helpful to you and your organization. Through your comments and questions, we hope to create a dialogue that makes us understand that, to succeed at a business and human level at the same time, we need to combine:

Thrill

Expertise

Courage

Humanism

Empathy

Advocacy

Respect

Transparency

Sustainability

People

Olympism

Relationships

Transformation

See you next week to discuss how the complex technology systems of sports events gain quality when tech teams are moved by THRILL.

What happens when we are moved by the excitement of our work and the joy we can bring to us and millions of fans worldwide?
